Before it is granted, the authority verifies your organization’s legal existence, its physical address, and that it is actively operating — checked against independent records, by a person rather than a script. The encryption is the same as any other certificate; what you are buying is the depth of the identity check behind it and the verified company details embedded in the certificate itself.

Are EV SSL Certificates worth it?

It depends what you are protecting. Browsers no longer show the green company name in the address bar that EV was once famous for, so the visible difference is smaller than it used to be. What you still get is the strictest identity verification available, verified company details inside the certificate, and a documentation trail that matters in regulated industries and in disputes. For financial services, healthcare or high-value ecommerce, that is usually worth it. For a brochure site it is not — DV or OV will serve you better for less.
